Versailles’73. American Runaway revolution

They came to restore the Palace but they changed the fashion world. On November 28, 1973, 5 American designers Anne Klein, Stephen Burrows, Bill Blass, Oscar de la Renta, and Halston exhibited against the lions of haute couture–Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, Hubert de Givenchy, Pierre Cardin, and Emanuel Ungaro and turned it into ready-to-wear’s iconic coming out party. The 1973 gala designed to raise funds for the restoration of the Palace of Versailles goes down in history as the night that put American fashion, and African-American models, on the map.
